If you ask any local which beach in Guarujá they'd recommend to a first-time visitor, chances are they'll say Praia de Pernambuco without hesitation. Located on the southeast end of the island of Santo Amaro, this 1.5-kilometer stretch of calm, turquoise water is consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the state of São Paulo — and for good reason.

In this guide, we dive into what makes Praia de Pernambuco so special, what to expect when you visit, how to get there, and why staying right on the beach makes all the difference.

Why Praia de Pernambuco Stands Out

Many of Guarujá's most famous beaches are beautiful but busy. Praia de Pernambuco offers something different: calm, protected waters perfect for swimming, a natural bay that shields the beach from strong currents, and a relaxed, residential atmosphere far from the city center bustle.

The beach is ideal for families with young children. Gentle waves and a gradual depth make it safe for kids, while adults can relax without constantly keeping an eye on the surf. The water tends to be cleaner and clearer than on exposed beaches, with visibility sometimes reaching 3–4 meters on calm days — making it excellent for snorkeling.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+) — the Brazilian sun is intense even on cloudy days.
  • Reusable water bottle — stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Beach umbrella — rental is available, but bringing your own is cheaper.
  • Snorkeling gear — the calm, clear water makes this a great spot.
  • Cash — most kiosks and vendors on the beach are cash-only.

Facilities and Services

Praia de Pernambuco is well-equipped without feeling overdeveloped. Along the beachfront, you'll find kiosks serving cold beer, coconut water, fresh fruit, and grilled snacks. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available daily. Public restrooms and outdoor showers are located at either end of the beach.

For a more comfortable meal, several excellent seafood restaurants are a short walk from the waterfront — including options specializing in freshly caught fish and traditional Brazilian pratos feitos.

Getting There

From Santos: Take the ferry (balsa) from Ponta da Praia to Guarujá. Once on the island, take a rideshare (Uber or 99) to Praia de Pernambuco — about 15 minutes from the terminal.

From São Paulo: Drive the Anchieta or Imigrantes Highway toward Santos, cross via ferry, and continue approximately 8 km to the beach. Total drive time is roughly 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic.

Best Time to Visit

Praia de Pernambuco is at its best from April to June and September to November — the shoulder seasons when the weather is warm, crowds are thin, and the water is clean. Summer months (December–March) are lively but much busier, especially on weekends.

For the most peaceful experience, visit on a weekday, arrive before 10 AM, and claim your spot before the Brazilian sun reaches its peak.
